Dennis joined AMRA in October 1980 but the writer (Barry Keens) did not meet him until the writer joined in December 1983. Dennis was one of a small band of members of WA at that time and I can remember Dennis showing him what facilities were available at the clubrooms at Meltham Station. I has recollections of working with him to sand down and coat the Library desk with varnish. This was done on the platform between the two rooms on the station because of the shortage of space in the building and the fact that varnish is not a good thing in confined spaces. We must have done a good job because the desk is still in use. This is the first of many times that I and the other members have worked with Dennis on a project to benefit all members.
In the 20 years that he has been a member, Dennis has built and exhibited two layouts at the WA branch annual show and has also been manager of the branch's O scale layout 'Ebford Regis' which has been shown twice and is undergoing a facelift for 2001. Dennis was secretary of the branch from 1985 to 1987 and is the branch's current secretary in his second term of office. In this modern age, he has had to learn to use a computer which he steadfastly resisted before he retired and now has become quite competent in producing minutes and letters in his position as Secretary.
It is often said, "the best way to get a job done is to ask a busy man". This is true in Dennis' case as he also has been Vice President of the branch and has just run his fourth exhibition (show). The branch meeting programme is organized by him and he also worked with me when I had the job some years ago.
The biggest projects the WA branch has had were the building of both stages of the current clubrooms. As project manager for the first stage, I was glad to have Dennis around, along with a few others like him, to help with the fitting out. Yes he was there again to work on the second stage.
Dennis is the holder of a meritorious award and WA branch's Clubman of the Year Award.
Who makes sure that we have tea, coffee, sugar, and biscuits at each meeting and that the garbage is taken out? You might have guessed that it is the same Dennis.
I have always found it a pleasure to work with Dennis both on and off the management committee and has developed a long-term friendship with him both at and away from the club.
