Rules of the Journal Author Competition

1. The competition shall be run annually commencing with the September 1999 through August 2000 membership year and continuing until determined otherwise by the COM and advised in Journal before the commencement of the membership year in which it is to be discontinued.
2. There shall be two categories of competition consisting of the following:
a) Articles of one page or greater, or a combination of articles submitted by the same author and appearing in the same Journal of equivalent length. Length can include photos and/or diagrams,
b) Articles of under one page, letters, or cartoons.
3. The following items appearing in Journal shall not be included in the competition:
a) Editorial material from the Editor or Managing Editor
b) Secretary's Desk, Registrar's Notes, President's or Treasurer's reports
c) State News
4. Members shall be entitled to vote for the item in each category that they consider to be the best in that category in each Journal. Each member shall be entitled to vote once in each category for each Journal that is published during the membership year. A member may vote for his own article. Votes for both categories and for several different Journals may be submitted at the same time. Votes can be sent to the Federal Secretary advising
a) your name
b) the Journal that your vote is for
c) the category that your vote is for
d) The name of the article and author that you are voting for, or the name of the letter writer, or the page number on which the cartoon appears.
5. Should a member attempt to cast more than one vote in each category for the same Journal then the extra votes shall be disregarded. Should a member vote for an article which in the opinion of the COM belongs in the other category then that vote will be counted in that category provided that the member has not also cast a vote in that other category.
6. Votes shall be distributed to the originator/author of each item and the author receiving the most votes for articles submitted in a given category during a membership year (September through August) shall be considered the winner of that category for that year and shall be awarded the prize.
7. In the event of a tied vote in either category the winner between the tied authors shall be decided by the COM. In this instance the COM shall not decide in favour of a member of the COM if an alternative choice exists.
8. If no votes in a category are received then the COM shall have the option of either awarding the prize to the author of their choice or alternatively not awarding the prize for that year.
9. Prizes shall be announced at the next AGM following the end of each membership year.
